Mastering the 3 Core Landscaping Conversion Formulas

One of the biggest headaches in residential landscaping is unit mismatch: homeowners measure yards with a tape measure in feet and inches, big-box retailers sell bags in cubic feet, landscape supply yards price mulch and soil by the cubic yard, and quarries bill gravel, sand, and stone by the scale ton. Our universal Cubic Yards Calculator and Yards-Tons-Bags Converter bridge every geometry and density conversion in one place.

First, converting square feet and depth into cubic yards always follows the "Rule of 324": because 1 cubic yard is 27 cubic feet and 1 foot is 12 inches, 1 cubic yard spread 1 inch thick covers exactly 324 square feet (27 × 12 = 324). To find cubic yards for any area, simply multiply your square footage by the depth in inches and divide by 324. For example, 324 sq ft at 3 inches deep is (324 × 3) ÷ 324 = 3.00 cubic yards.

Second, converting cubic yards into retail bags requires dividing total cubic feet (Cubic Yards × 27) by the volume printed on the bag: divide cubic yards by 27/2 (multiply yards by 13.5) for standard 2.0 cu ft mulch bags; multiply yards by 18 for 1.5 cu ft raised-bed bags; multiply yards by 36 for 0.75 cu ft topsoil bags; or multiply yards by 54 for 0.50 cu ft (50-lb) gravel and sand bags.

Third, converting between cubic yards (volume) and US short tons (weight) depends entirely on material bulk density: light organic bark mulch weighs 0.25 to 0.30 tons per cubic yard; screened topsoil weighs ~1.10 tons per cubic yard; dry sand and pea gravel weigh ~1.30 tons per cubic yard; #57 crushed stone and concrete sand weigh ~1.35 tons per cubic yard; crusher run base weighs ~1.40 tons per cubic yard; and wet ready-mix concrete weighs ~2.00 tons per cubic yard.

Quick Mental Checkpoints Before You Order

Rule 1

Remember the 108 Sq Ft Benchmark at 3 Inches Deep

Three inches is the most common depth for mulch, gravel paths, and garden beds. At 3 inches deep, 1 cubic yard always covers 108 square feet (roughly a 10×11 ft area).

Rule 2

1 Ton of Gravel Covers Less Area Than 1 Cubic Yard of Gravel

Because gravel weighs ~1.35 tons per cubic yard, 1 ton of gravel is only 0.74 cubic yards (20 cubic feet). At 3 inches deep, 1 cubic yard covers 108 sq ft, whereas 1 ton covers only 80 sq ft.

Rule 3

Use Custom Density Override if Your Supplier Gives a Local Spec

Basalt trap rock in the Pacific Northwest weighs more per yard than porous oolitic limestone in Florida. Enter your quarry’s exact lbs/yd³ spec into the Custom Density box for pinpoint tonnage.

Frequently Asked Questions (Converters)

How do I calculate cubic yards from feet and inches?

Multiply Length (feet) × Width (feet) × (Depth in inches ÷ 12) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Or simply multiply Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) and divide by 324.

Is a ton more or less than a cubic yard?

It depends on the material! For lightweight mulch (600 lbs/yd³), 1 ton is 3.33 cubic yards. For heavy gravel (2,700 lbs/yd³), 1 ton is only 0.74 cubic yards. For dry topsoil (~2,000–2,200 lbs/yd³), 1 ton and 1 cubic yard are nearly equal.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

There are exactly 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard (3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 ft³).
